Peyote songs have been sung in Gerald Primeaux's family for five generations, so it's something he's absorbed since birth. These songs of healing complement that peyote idea beautifully, and the a cappella arrangements for Primeaux and two other singers are discreetly lovely, quiet and wonderfully soothing. In fact, it's only on the final cut that he returns to the tradition for "Four Peyote Songs" delivered with drum and rattle behind the voice. He sings in both Dakota and English, but his approach to English in what are so obviously Native American songs is interesting, framed in a very traditional style, making them seem almost out of place and foreign, so you feel you're hearing the language for the first time. A surprising and elegiac album. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi
