Somewhere between techno and new age, Vampire's Lair: Blood Thirsty Beats for Halloween delivers the damaged goods. The usual moans, maniacal guffaws, and rustling chains are all here and wrapped in a mid-'90s electronic monster suit. In "Vampire Song," the mantra "I love your face/I like your skin/I need your blood" is repeated over what sounds like a Depeche Mode song. In "Killing Screams," water drips and humans suffer, writhing amidst the factory-preset keyboard carnage. "Vampire Dance" begins with an unfortunate victim pleading with his vampire to cease this unprovoked attack before launching into an undead funk jam. While the Halloween overachievers with the cool yard may rule the night, the introverted consumer would do well to pick up a copy of Vampire's Lair, turn the speakers outward, and allow these bloodthirsty beats to sort the future Goth kids from the brats who just want candy. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
