When the good folks at Riki Tik Recordings and Castle decided to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Sugarhill Gang's "Rappers Delight" with a remix album, they knew exactly who to turn the tracks over to -- some of Britain's (and America's) best beat-makers and remixers, including Double Dee & Steinski, Pressure Drop, Coldcut, Roots Manuva, Two Lone Swordsmen, Nightmares on Wax, Plaid, Freddy Fresh, Major Force, and Scratch Perverts, among others. The two-disc set is an excellent listen whether you're old-school or new, and it begins with a bang: Double Dee & Steinski's irresistible five-minute megamix of Sugar Hill hits. Roots Manuva brings out the melancholy side of Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five's "The Message" with muted trumpet and stark beats, while Nightmares on Wax on Plaid apply their respective styles to a pair of well-suited Grandmaster Flash tracks, "It's Nasty" and "Scorpio." The second disc has fewer high points, though Rae & Christian's groovy remake of "It's the Joint" and Scratch Perverts' closing acrobatics over "Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" are definitely worth hearing. ~ John Bush, Rovi
