One of three entries in Time Life's Sounds of the Eighties series (distinct from the larger series available through the company's television offer), Sounds of the Eighties: Rockin' 80's has a highly misleading title, at least for anyone who makes the reasonable assumption that "rockin' 80's" is going to mean "hard-rocking" or "guitar-driven." Some might put Pat Benatar in that category -- she's here with "Love Is a Battlefield" -- but most of the biggest hits present fall into the categories of adult contemporary or urban R&B. Steve Winwood's "Higher Love," Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative," Jody Watley's "Looking for a New Love," and Will to Power's "Baby, I Love Your Way/Freebird Medley" are all strong singles; they just aren't what most people expect when they pick up a compilation called Rockin' 80's. If you can ignore the misleading packaging, there's plenty of solid pop/rock here. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
