Synergy Entertainment's Bob Marley & the Wailers collection titled Soul Almighty: 12 Marley Greats is yet another disc that uses the tracks Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer cut in the late '60s/early '70s with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry. It randomly picks 12 of the many fine cuts the group made at the time when they were finding their way out of ska and rocksteady and into some very rootsy reggae. Some of the tracks like the bubbling "Small Axe" and "Cheer Up" are still driven by ska rhythms; some are very heavy and dark like "400 Years" and "No Sympathy." All are colored by the deepening spiritual and political visions of the three writers and bathed in the production genius of Lee "Scratch" Perry. There are collections that have more tracks and present them in a more historically interesting manner but if this is the only Wailers' collection from this era you can find, it is worth the money. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi
