Besides the woozy and wonderful title track (the Lips' long overdue and utterly enjoyable radio breakthrough), this four-song single collects a number of amusing and intriguing side efforts from the group. The inclusion of "Translucent Egg" makes for an interesting comparison to the title track, as the lead riff in both is the same (apparently "Translucent Egg" came first and was recycled, though the recording date is mid-1993). Sudden tape machine starts and stops, light speaker-hopping beats, and more add to the loose instrumental fun. Two tracks from Transmissions then appear, both in rather different takes. "Turn It On ('Bluegrass Version')" features members of the Butthole Surfers and fIREHOSE doing, indeed, a fun bluegrass-style hoedown, with some electric guitar and effects here and there (including an ending that never seems to end). "*******," aka "Plastic Jesus," similarly surfaces in a "Porch Version," Wayne Coyne and his acoustic guitar gently performing the sly George Cromarty/Ed Rush piece. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi
