There are so many compilations cluttering George Jones' catalog that it's hard to tell which ones are worthwhile and which ones aren't. A rule of thumb is, budget-line collections are either for indiscriminate casual fans or for the hardcore, who don't mind repetition on a disc if it contains one or two cuts they don't have already. Since Sony Music Special Products' Nothin' Like George Jones (terrific title, by the way) draws exclusively from his Epic catalog, which wasn't as haphazardly released as his Mercury or Musicor recordings, it doesn't have as many surprises as its cheap cousins on other labels. Instead, most of Nothin' consists of big hits -- "The Grand Tour," "These Days (I Barely Get By)," "He Stopped Loving Her Today" -- plus a selection of lesser-known hits and album cuts. None of these are really rare, but by the mid-'90s, they weren't in print, either, which means latter-day obsessives will find this of some worth. Casual listeners, however, will probably want to stick with more comprehensive collections, even though this sampler offers a good taste of his grandly theatrical work with Billy Sherrill. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
