David Rose's Musica 1.0 is described as a "CD maxi-single" on its front cover, but some might prefer to think of this 24-minute disc as an EP. Musica 1.0 contains a total of six tracks but only three different songs, two of which are heard once ("Vamos a Bailar" and "Laura No Est?") and one of which is heard with four different mixes: "Per Elisa." And if Delvian wants you to think of this 2005 release as a single instead of an EP, shouldn't the main song, "Per Elisa," be on the front cover instead of Musica 1.0? But more important than whether this is a "CD maxi-single" or an EP is the quality of the music itself -- and Musica 1.0 is decent, catchy Europop/Euro-dance with a strong '80s influence. "Per Elisa" ("For Elisa") is actually a cover; the tune was originally recorded by Italian pop singer Alice in 1981 -- and although Alice's version isn't well known in the United States, it was a number one hit in Italy (back when Laura Pausini wasn't old enough to vote) and also fared well in some other West European countries. Clearly, Rose appreciates the romance languages; "Per Elisa" is totally in Italian, while "Laura No Est?" ("Laura Isn't Here") is strictly in Spanish and "Vamos a Bailar" ("Let's Dance") offers an ingl?s/espa?ol blend (mostly ingl?s). Whatever the language, Rose is an American singer with a very European approach -- and this likable EP (or "CD maxi-single") makes listeners want to keep an eye on the New Yorker and see what he will do on a full-length album. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
