Metallica's mega-hit 1991 self-titled release (aka The Black Album) got the "Classic Albums" treatment ten years after its original release by the folks at Pioneer. The 90-minute DVD traces the songs' origins and the recording process, with interviews with just about everyone involved with its making: bandmembers, producer Bob Rock, and others. Also included is classic session footage from 1991, which documents several of the tracks beginning as demos and slowly transforming into the riff-heavy monsters they'd eventually become. Some interesting tidbits that you'll come across is how Rock had chose working with Metallica instead of Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora, James Hetfield's lyric-writing, and how they were in a mad rush to complete the album to meet a firm deadline. Longtime fans will notice there was similar footage included in the earlier DVD/video release A Year and a Half in the Life Of..., but overall, there's a lot of new insight and previously unknown info that the viewer will come across with the Metallica edition of the "Classic Albums" series. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi
