Jerry Clower is one of those comedians you either get or you hate. Generally, there's no explaining why you dislike a particular comedian, you just know that he or she grates on your nerves. Clower, however, pushes those buttons more than most, possibly because his country cornball act is often either too obvious or too backwoods for city dwellers. So be it; it doesn't matter to me anymore, ever since I've given up trying to understand comedy. I've come to terms that not everyone will share my opinion that Bob Odenkirk and David Cross are blindingly brilliant, perhaps the best comedians to ever walk the face of this earth, and that's fine with me. I've made some personal peace, enough to recognize that Clower Power, with cuts like "Ole Brumey Wasn't Runnin' a Coon" and "The Ole Timey Ice Box," is a good Clower album, one that will undoubtedly make some people chuckle heartily. In fact, some could even argue that it captures him in his early-'70s prime. I wouldn't, since I can't figure out what prime Clower would be, but some could.... ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
