Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The success of the new age compilation Pure Moods in early 1997 led to the release of Celtic Moods later in the year. Like its predecessor, Celtic Moods is essentially a new age collection -- here, Celtic is code for mystic. A few songs, such as the Waterboys' "Strange Boat," adhere to the earthy spirit of Irish folk, but much of the music -- including cuts by Clannad, Loreena McKennitt, Ashley MacIsaac, Sharon Shannon, Mary Black, Altan, Christy Moore, and the Edge/Sin?ad O'Connor -- is atmospheric and ambient, evoking the mystical elements of Celtic music. In other words, if you're looking for true Irish folk, go elsewhere -- this is new age music with vaguely Celtic overtones, and if you're a fan of that style, there's no better compilation available than Celtic Moods. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
