James Christopher Monger

The soundtrack for 2011?s Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, which is the sequel to 2009?s Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (seriously), includes the usual array of recognizable pop hits and offbeat originals, all of which are rendered through the tiny nasal passages of the Chipmunks and the Chipettes. As the godfathers of helium-core (formed in 1958), these mammals are pretty much bulletproof when it comes to a critique of their signature vocal sound, but song choice is another matter entirely. Silly pop songs have always been the fictional group?s forte, and takes on the Go-Go?s' ?Vacation,? Johnny O?Keefe's ?Real Wild Child? (the Iggy Pop rendition), and Michael Franti & Spearhead's ?Say Hey? are reliably fun and dumb, but the 'Munks spend a bit too much time ?in da club? with LMFAO (?Party Rock Anthem?) and Beyonc? (?Survivor?) for omnivorous, 53-year-old varmints that are supposed to sleep for an average of 15 hours a day. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
