Summary: Robby Benson went from journeyman juvenile player to full-fledged star in 1973's Jeremy. Benson plays the titular 15-year-old musician who falls in love with fellow high schooler Susan (Glynnis O'Connor), an aspiring dancer; he is supported throughout the relationship by two loving, understanding parents. Director Arthur Barron's stylistic flourishes (such as shifting-focus close-ups, zoom-ins, and "groovy" atmosphere shots) firmly place this picture in the '70s. This marked the first of a handful of Benson/O'Connor teamings; the stars reportedly dated each other for a time in real life. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A sweet little film romance, Jeremy may be a little too sticky for some, but it's endearing enough that many will be willing to overlook its flaws. Kind of the "puppy love" answer to Love Story, Jeremy doesn't go in for the tragedy of that earlier film, but the characters do indeed feel as if the events that happen to them are as worthy of notice and attention. The film's naivete, however calculated, is appealing, and there's a youthful awkwardness to the enterprise that works in its favor. It must be said, however, that Jeremy is short on action, after a while, some viewers may wish for a bit more plot, a bit more drama, even if manufactured. But for those who are willing to accept its rambling as reflective of adolescent first love, this won't matter a great deal. Jeremy benefits greatly from its leads, with Robby Benson and Glynnis O'Connor turning in the first of their performances that earned them fame as romantic teen idols in the 1970's. Both are good, with Benson perhaps more accomplished and assured than his co-star. The supporting cast is solid, and Arthur Barron's direction, while visually smacking of the 1970s, supports the stars and the story appropriately. ~ Craig Butler, Rovi
