Summary: The colorful stage revue African Footprint first gestated in 1999, when innovative theatrical producer Richard Loring foresaw creating a musical portrait of South Africa on stage, cast in the mold of Riverdance and Stomp. Loring promptly hit the streets of the Soweto district of Johannesburg and auditioned hundreds of young hopefuls, out of which he chose, enlisted and rigorously trained thirty non-professional cast members. The resultant production uses a combination of traditional African dances - including gumboot, Kwela-jive and pantsula - and South African instrumental sounds, including the African drum and the pennywhistle - to play out the unique and colorful history of South Africa on stage. The home video release African Footprint features a film of this live stage show. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
