Synopsis: The brave swordsman Adol Christin once again embarks on his epic adventure to the legendary lost land of Ys herein, facing familiar foes as well as all-new challenges. Ys I & II Chronicles is an enhanced remake of the first two games in Nihon Falcom's influential console RPG series, although not the first. The PlayStation Portable edition features fully re-vamped graphics with new hand-drawn sprites, retaining the 16-bit style 2D top-down perspective. The soundtrack has been rearranged and studio-recorded. New options and modes add replay value for fans of the series. Presentational updates notwithstanding, the game is played much like earlier versions, with simple controls and a deep storyline. Battles can be fought using the directional controls alone, as the player's character essentially must bump into enemies in order to defeat them. There is a large game world to explore, however, and much lore to uncover if the hero is to solve its greatest mysteries. The first two Ys games were originally available only in Japan, but the I & II compilation has been redeveloped for international release on multiple platforms, including DS, PlayStation 2, and Windows PC, as well as PSP. ~ T.J.
