Style(s): 2D Turn-Based Strategy
Synopsis: Sometimes cute, sometimes obnoxious, but always ready for a fight, Team 17's Worms take another shot at Wii in Battle Island. New weapon customizations and multiplayer modes add tactical possibilities and strategic considerations, but the play of the game fits the format of the classic home-computer originals. A match begins with the little worm soldiers from each competing team placed across a large 2D battlefield, which is viewed from the side. Players move in turns, during which they have a limited amount of time to position their worm, choose a weapon, aim, and fire. The tension escalates as players account for different shot arcs, variable winds, and the ever-present possibility of (usually unintended) friendly fire. The ground on which the worms stand is destructible, so the battlefield changes gradually throughout the fight, as missiles and bombs destroy land bridges and blast craters in the earth. An enemy worm might be taken out with a (lucky) direct shot, but at least as many worms tend to perish due to collateral damage, or from falling off of a precarious perch into the deadly sea below. Battle Island's graphics are colorful and cartoonish, similar to those the console's earlier Worms: A Space Oddity. In the tradition of the series, the teams of anthropomorphized annelids can be extensively personalized, with players choosing names, appearances, voices, and victory dances, as well as customizing the selection of armaments they'll carry into battle. In the game's "Weapon Factory," players can mix and match attributes to create new guns. In the design modes, they can alter battlefields and create their own levels. Along with a 30-level single-player campaign and 30 pre-designed puzzle stages, Worms: Battle Islands offers online play for connected gamers, in five multiplayer modes. ~ T.J. Deci, All Game Guide
