While it is a bit concerning that so many retro-themed titles are popping up on a system starved for original releases, if future compilations are of the same quality as the Sega Genesis Collection, few PSP owners will complain. Included are an impressive 28 titles developed by Sega, many of which were the cream of the crop on the best-selling console. The most surprising inclusion? All three 16-bit Phantasy Star games packaged together, which are easily worth the purchase price alone for role-playing game fans. The collection also includes a nice balance of signature titles (Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe, Ecco the Dolphin) along with some overlooked gems (Ristar, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon) and even a game previously unreleased in the States (Golden Axe III). Those who thought the Genesis was incapable of delivering colorful graphics or rich sound will be surprised by the quality of some of these titles, as the developers pushed the system to new heights with each passing year. Sega Genesis Collection includes an attractive interface where players can easily scroll through the list of games and jump to a brief bio of each title, view some hints (illustrated with screenshots), and examine the original box art in detail. Bonus features are also available, many of which are unlocked by satisfying certain conditions, such as clearing the first act or level of a specific game. Included are interviews, trailers, and five arcade games, from Congo Bongo to Super Zaxxon, bringing the total number of games to 33. The PSP version also includes three viewing options, the ability to save at any time, Ad-hoc wireless support, and a choice of directional pad or analog control, the latter surprisingly beneficial in shooters Vectorman and Vectorman 2. The only complaint is that there are even more Sega standouts still available, such as Streets of Rage, Shining Force, ToeJam & Earl, and the rest of the Sonic games. Hopefully, these will all be addressed in future installments, but in terms of value and quality, consider Sega Genesis Collection a must-have title for your PSP. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide
