Synopsis: The North American re-packaging of Japan's hugely popular Dragon Quest (or Dragon Warrior) series of role-playing games begins in earnest with Dragon Quest IV: The Chapters of the Chosen for the DS. The story is split into five chapters, each introducing new characters important to the overall adventure. Chapter one, "Ragnar McRyan and the Case of the Missing Children," follows the titular knight as he investigates a series of mysterious kidnappings. The second chapter, "Alena and the Journey to the Tourney," follows combative Tsarina tomboy Alena as she escapes from her castle. Chapter three, "Torneko and the Extravagant Excavation," tells the tale of Torneko Taloon, an apprentice merchant and family man who dreams of becoming the greatest merchant in the world. The fourth chapter, "Meena and Maya and the Mahabala Mystery" follows the travels of two sisters who set out to avenge the murder of their alchemist father. Chapter five, "The Chosen," unites all of the characters under the leadership of a single hero to help defend a tiny and remote village. Dragon Quest IV: The Chapters of the Chosen features traditional RPG gameplay in which players gain experience points by participating in random turn-based battles, meeting a wide assortment of colorful characters, and unearthing secret treasures. The game has been given a complete overhaul from its 8-bit progenitor, featuring 3D graphics and an arranged orchestral score, and gamers can also make use of the DS' wireless functionality with the new Chance Encounter mode that lets players populate bustling towns with characters donated by friends. ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide
