Synopsis: Avalon Code is a "by the book" role-playing game that lets players write their own stories. At the start of the game, players can choose a male or female lead character. This and other choices, made throughout the adventure, determine the way the story develops and ends. As the tale begins, the player's character dreams of the end of the world, and of a book that can create a new one. The hero awakens the next morning to find a magic book nearby, but its pages blank. Enlightened by a magic spirit, the hero sets forth on an epic adventure to fill in those pages, by exploring the world and cataloging the people, places, and monsters that exist there. Players can make changes to items that have been recorded in the book, such as altering a weapon's strength or switching around a monster's special abilities. Finding and subduing monsters, to collect them in the book, is an important part of play. Over-world exploration and combat is action-oriented, while strategic planning and light puzzle-solving move players past storyline obstacles and forward to greater abilities and challenges. The game uses 3D graphics, viewed mostly from an isometric perspective. The art style is heavily anim? influenced, with cut-scenes to help move the story along no matter which path the player chooses. Published in North America by Japanese import specialist Xseed, Avalon Code was created in collaboration between Matrix Software, the studio behind the Final Fantasy III and IV remakes for DS, and developers at Marvelous Entertainment who previously worked on games in the Harvest Moon and Rune Factory series. ~ T.J.
