Claudia Alta Lady Bird Johnson was born in Karnack, Texas on December 22, 1912. She graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a bachelors degree in liberal arts in 1933 and a bachelors degree in journalism in 1934. While First Lady of the United States, she focused on environmentalism and lobbied Congress to help pass the Highway Beautification Bill in 1965. She also served as honorary chairwoman of the national Head Start program. Her book, A White House Diary, was published in 1970. She received the Medal of Freedom in 1977 and a Congressional Gold Medal in 1988. She died on July 11, 2007 at the age of 94.
